I cannot get over the brilliance of the whole "cars are not trained by horses" "cars do not pretend to be horses" counter!! That's brilliant and a perfect point to use against the whole "get with the times" argument. You're completely right. No other technological advancement in art from the past cannot exist without the thing it's attempting to replace... cars do not eat stolen horses to function. Digital art doesn't need to scan the Louvre to be able to be usable. Photography isn't made using pieces of painted canvases. It's so clear! I have run into one person online who says they are disabled and is using chatgpt to write... that sits uncomfortably with me, surely there's alternatives that doesn't require genAI... They said they struggle to organize words on their own, and I don't doubt that's a possible disability, but again there must be ways that don't require genAI to manage. A few years ago there was one singer who had lost their voice somehow, who made their own LLM with the voice of a consenting singer, their existing body of music, and used that to be able to 'sing' new songs. But they did write their own songs. I think this borders on ethical use for genAI, as it was their own work, the person's voice that was input was done with consent (and most definitely compensation) to 'sing' new songs. It's still a bit iffy but it's significantly less iffy than 99.999999% of genAI that exists.
