Great discussion. Reminds me that the disturbing thing about Lord of the Rings is that no one can be trusted with the Ring of Power. Gandalf is wise enough to understand even HE can't be trusted with it. It is comforting to think that the future can be secured as long as Ai development is kept away from bad actors and managed solely by good people. But if Tolkien's assessment of humanity is correct, the threat is not external to us, but within us when confronted with the possibility of wielding absolute power. While we can aspire to be Gandalfs, seems to me we're running low on Frodos.
