I hate the fact that AI arguments on both sides are always black and white. I remember when Corridor used AI to 'anime-ify' a video they wrote, directed, acted all IRL themselves, and people went absolutely INSANE on them. Or when an artist trains a model on exclusively their OWN work, and uses it to only that degree. The degree of their OWN art. They go insane over that, too. I think using AI to make free and limited visual content that you don't charge for, but perhaps can monetize, isn't necessarily bad--up until you get the money to hire artists. Money and talent are real barrier. So, perhaps, you've written a book and are going to self-publish, and need a cover. You don't have the skill to make a cover yourself, and you don't have the money to make a cover, so using AI to give you a non-specific but eye-catching cover that will be replaced later, should you make the money you need to commission someone, is fine. I say that as someone who has made covers for self-published authors. I'm not a photoshop or artistic whiz, I just know how to make textures, colors and fonts work together. Still, I wouldn't hold it against someone making like... a red-tinged cityscape as their cover via AI, or something. The caveat being that you do replace it with a real artist's work once you can commission them. For writers, I think doing writing circles with an AI to learn how to write creatively is fine. Writing is a little more accessible than art, rendering, etc. But practice makes perfect, and AI is good for that. Not for publishing AI written work, and I wouldn't want people not using AI trained in their own art, to sell themselves as an artist. Also, at least he's doing more than the so-called AI artists who just do a 100 word prompt with not even inserting a self-driven sketch for the AI to work with. Yes, I've had my writing snapped up off the internet and fed to an AI. Yes, I quietly use it to help me visualize characters or locations. No, I don't use it and call myself an artist, and I won't use it for anything I hope to make money off of. I just think this conversation needs to be so much more nuanced, and I do think you're trying to do that. I'm just frustrated at everyone lol
