If you think it through you'll realize that even if we acheive level 5 autonomous self driving cars - they'll still cause more traffic not less, albeit they may reduce parking. Currently, every car has a driver. Most of the time in most places thats you driving to your destination. Now a car or your car will drive you to your destination, then drive itself to it's next destination. So what used to be max one car ride per person can suddenly become 2 car rides per person. Half the vehicles on the road will be empty cars shuffling around either to pick up their next person or to go to some designated parking area. This is the reason why cities actually limit car services, you have a bunch of drivers on the road looking for someone to drive, rather than a person just driving themselves to their destination - it adds to congestion not reduces it.
