35,000 people die in the US in traffic related incidents every year. I don’t see how a human driver would have avoided this particular accident. The pedestrian comes out of nowhere. I drove over a fox ones at night in a similar setup and it broke my heart, but I had no chance. What I don’t understand is that the self driving technology of this vehicle did not spot the pedestrian. To me this looks like a textbook situation where automated vehicles have an advantage over humans. Sadly in this case the technology failed, but I’m certain that in future this type of accident will be a thing of the past. Instead of 35,000 deaths we will have something like 350. Now we look at death in traffic as a necessary evil. I predict that in future, with automated driving in place, This will not be the case anymore. Everyone of these 350 accidents will be properly investigated, scrutinised and lessons will be learnt and 34650 lives will be spared.
