Aside from the energy waste (which can be mitigated once we move to renewable resources), I as an actual artist have no issue with the existence of AI as a tool for personal use and making people's lives easier. My only condition, which I thought the "Let's democratize art!" AI dudebros would agree with, is that AI models trained on the entire internet including copyrighted material should be free to use, just like Google is, and that all works generated from such models are automatically put into Creative Commons or other public domain-like license for all. That way, AI users can freely create to their heart's content, but for media companies to actually make a profit from their patented creations, they would need to either fairly compensate a human artist or make a model based solely on works granted under contract and with consent.
That should be a win-win, but no. Ironic that the "adapt or die" people throw a fit when they're even slightly inconvenienced.
