A good YT talk regarding the issues surrounding IP, usage rights, legal issues, etc.
I'm 100% supportive of artists and anyone who is impacted to rage and complain. Many of the points you mention are very much on point.
Regarding the toxicity... *coughs* this is the internet when it attacks women, minorities, etc. The internet is full of trolls. Just as trolls do not represent the entirety of whatever group they are defending/etc... the same is true of AI art supporters. Just because there are people being a-holes to artists voicing their concerns and opinions doesn't mean that all AI art suppoters are. :/
I sincerely hope that the matter of Copyright will be addressed... along with the matter of opt-in vs opt-out.
I like AI technology and I like art. I do not like AI tech to the detriment of art, I see it as something that should bolster art and give artists more options. Ie, I see AI tech as additional tools for artists, writers, coders, and other creatives.
Food for thought, if you want to fight effectively against this:
1) Go over the TOS/EULA of the sites that you have published your works on.
2) Go after _ALL_ sites and entities that are making copies of your art and caching/publishing it on their platform without your permission.
3) Realize that if you go into a discussion calling people thieves, that is a really really bad way to start a conversation. Just as if someone who is supportive of AI art calls the artist a no talent hack. Discuss the core points and understand WTH both sides mean when they use certain words. I guarantee you, there are words used that the two sides have very definitions of.
4) Consider the scope of what you mean when you say "AI Art". Right now, that scope is essentially a massive wildcard that includes anything making use of AI technology to produce art, whether in whole or in part. _That_ definition is dangerous to AI tech supporters and artists alike. As there is no effective way to detect AI generated art at this time.
@samdoesarts, thanks for taking the time to put together both the line of thinking and the video to present your position and viewpoint. The opt-in by default today regarding the datasets is very much like the opt-in of phone numbers, addresses, and emails that spammers of the past have created. And in many ways, is problematic to a similar scale.
Btw, love your art style. It is deceptively straightforward. I feel like I've seen your artwork grace CGart or one of the other magazines in years past. Amazed that you make instructional and inspirational videos as well as create art.
While the efforts of the AI companies have been shielded by their layers of laws... the folks who are actively targetting your art style to replicate it... I suspect there is a legal caluse that can apply to them as they are actively developing a means to forge your art style.
Thinking about classical art and how every now and then a "new" classical artists' work will be "discovered"... I think that in that framework, the ability to replicate the style of an artists' work is very much like forgery. I would imagine that someone who trained an AI to learn the physicality of how the artist paints through the scanning, analysis, and finally machine learning... it would be possible to create a machine that can replicate the technique and style of the artiwork. And given the right materials, would be able to create what the art world would consider a forgery.
Having said all of that, I'm hoping for an AI tech solution as it relates to art and other creative fields which is a win-win for all involved.
