Fantastic video! I strongly believe genuine artificial consciousness is just around the corner – all it takes is one group of engineers that approach AI slightly differently to how they've approached it before. Here's an attempted short version of my reasoning:
1) Consciousness is most likely not something that complicated... relatively speaking. Considering it appears in a "computer" as small as us. Probably also in other animals, if not all of them, if one thinks as consciousness as something that's not an either/or, but as a spectrum. Each of you have probably experienced different levels of consciousness on a regular basis. All it takes is a couple of shots of vodka, or only getting 4 hours of sleep.
2) We like to think of consciousness of something that is more complicated or "special" than what it probably is. Maybe consciousness is more about being "bad at remembering" than it is being good at understanding. Or more precisely; consciousness is about forgetting the right things, at the right time, to build up a bank of references and experiences that puts the current moment into a meaningful context. In other words, conscious beings have wants and fears of different importance, and their perception is filtered through this. Old useful information is gradually forgotten (unless VERY important, like trauma or bliss) to make room for new more relevant information.
3) The dimension of time is probably much more relevant than we usually think of it being in regards to consciousness and AI. We experience consciousness like a "playhead" in time. Like a youtube video, where you remember the meaning of the pixels and sound in the frames that came before, and when you reach the end – it's over, aKa, you're dead. Current computer "intelligence" knows all the information of the video. Every pixel, every soundwave. All at once. But with no reference point in time and space to observe from, and with no hierarchy of wants and fears, nothing "makes sense". In other words, I believe conscious AI needs to experience input over time, filter information and gradually build up a bank of references based on wants and fears to mimic true consciousness as we know it. It needs to "feel" its place in both time and space; a reference point. And the good (or scary) aspect of this is that with powerful computers, there's nothing limiting it to our speed. Give it a digital environment to "grow up in", and it'll catch up with a grown adult and surpass them in a matter of seconds.
No one will probably read this, but felt like sharing my thoughts with the void! Have a great day, person who reads this!
