Commenter sounds like me. I will now lurk on this channel in order to hopefully feel a bit better. Artists: you may not be born with the skill, but you are born with the brain. The creativity. The picture in your mind you can put on paper. The innate desire to create. You go through rough periods of no motivation but ultimately come back because you know you create masterpieces. People enjoy looking at what you create. It fuels you. You enjoy the process and the reward. I have been trying so fucking hard for over a decade to learn how to draw, sculpt, paint, sketch, color, animate, and so on. I’ve worked with countless mediums and techniques, I’ve taken classes, and all my friends are wonderful artists and have even asked them countless times for help. To no avail. I literally cannot become an artist. I’m no good and I never will be. The pictures in my head cannot be put on paper or on a screen. There is a disconnect. A disconnect that cannot be learnt away. Nobody will ever want to see what I create. I will never experience that fame nor feel the envy of others. I will never have a skill those around me wish they could have. I will never be someone’s mentor nor their teacher. I am not pro AI “art.” However, I’m so tired of the “just pick up a pencil and learn” argument. There are just people like me who will never progress no matter how hard they try. “It takes practice and patience,” and to that I say: has the past decade meant absolutely nothing? I have not progressed a single bit. I’m tired of being the only person I know with no talent. No calling. No skill. While my friends proudly present their art in shows and revel in the praise, I watch enviously from the background, where I will stay for as long as I am alive. To those of you that have a skill: Appreciate the gift that you have. Your mind is very much a gift. It is special. Whether it be drawing, painting, programming, creating cosplays, baking, cooking, singing, dancing, writing, mathematics, or any one of the hundreds of skills a human being could possibly acquire.
