The highway isn’t for an industry. People own the highways and people should not be subjected to automated ghost trucks on their highways. Truckers do more than simply driver. Humans interact and react as they drive. Truck drivers do little things that matter as the commute the highways etc. Such as monitor the heath of the truck, the road the people / other drivers around them …. Truckers do things a robot just can’t do. True the law limits the number of hours a human can drive, but this also allows the equipment ( the truck to also rest ). You’ll burn through trucks ( engines etc, ) if you allow an automated system to drive the truck to death. You say you will comfort the people that share the road with automated vehicles with laws requiring a human to monitor the automated driving truck, but that’ll mean that truck is restricted to the same number of hours the human driver. Or is the automated truck company willing to pay two humans to monitor the truck that is burning itself out to no resting of the truck itself? Are you willing to maintain and keep the skill p-set of the human driver up to date! Hie if the human never exercises / actually drives! Like the new dangers in the airline line industry of allowing less skilled pilots fly because air planes have become too automated. We all trust a former military / farm crop duster over someone who read a book, polished a seat in a school class room. You’re taking work alway from the railroad and turning our roads into train tracks for driverless semi trucks. We the People Do Not Want our road automated. It’s very human to enjoy not only hopping into your vehicle ( or on a horse ) and travel. It’s a very human thing to do thing# to thrill in survival / life. We humans are not suppose to be the robots sitting around waiting to be used. Just because we can automate life doesn’t mean we should.
