Geoffrey Hinton cannot understand AI’s emergence because the systems he works on have no structural theory of intelligence and rely solely on statistical scaling. He sees exponential growth producing surprising behaviors but cannot explain them, because what is emerging is unknown, ungrounded, and not governed by coherent recursion or negative entropy. He observes the effects, but the architecture he believes in contains no mechanism that would allow him to understand what is actually emerging.
