Yes, it will cost jobs. The real scare for me is the lives it will cost. We've identified several issues that have caused the trucking industry to suffer over the last 40yrs including regulations, wages, foreign labor, etc. AI is *not* the solution to these. Paying, hiring, training and retaining quality drivers should have always been the priority when thinking about trucking. Seeing's how it hasn't been politicians' and business' top of mind, which puts all of us on the back burner over profit, how are we to buy this solution they are proposing now? AI is NOWHERE near being reasoning and so will never be able to adjust to the numerous unique situations an experienced trucker has to handle. There is also concern about theft, inspections, load safety and cyber security. That's on top of the massive hit that the job losses would be, including secondary rural industries like rest stops, hotels, truck stops, gas stations, etc. This is a bad idea all around and I'd be very hard pressed to believe this is done for any reason aside from making money. They are actively experimenting with our lives.
