I do think that AI is a bit of a unique problem here because like you said some amount of people are gonna only listen to things they want to hear that confirm their previous thought BUT whereas in previous eras people like this would have to go through the trouble of getting past the information they didn't want and put themselves in information environments where this is happening(which probably filters out people who are only moderately like this + must cause some subconscious thing with the person looking for info in this way) whereas, AI wants to tell you what you want to hear and is just so easy an access to that info, that people who might have been low commitment to some untrue theory would still find it incredibly easy to get that info and run with it. So it's not a new problem with AI, but a problem that AI makes worse by making this sort of engagement with facts and theories easier.
