Here’s a perspective… I picked up on the mention of a universal credit system — AI taking over our jobs, and the idea that we, the public, might one day be paid a minimum amount not to work. There was talk about how this could have a profound effect on our mental health and sense of purpose, since many people define themselves through their jobs. I don’t disagree that for those who genuinely find purpose in their work, this could be difficult. But what about the rest of us — the people who work because we have to? Honestly, I don’t know a single person who’s truly happy in their job. My friend works in the motor trade and hates it. If she had more time and money, she’d be studying embalming — it’s what she really wants to do. Another friend would love to learn mechanics and welding and have his own workshop, but after ten-hour delivery shifts, he’s too exhausted and can’t afford the training. Another friend works two jobs online just to raise her kids; she’s a brilliant artist but has no time to create. And me? I work full-time online, yet it’s still not enough to live independently as a single mum with two kids. If I had the time and space, I’d be putting it into my land — building my small organic food farm, studying somatic and Fascia healing, and eventually creating affordable well-being retreats on my little farm. I am working towards it, but most days I’m just exhausted after eight hours in front of a screen, and I don't have the funds. I understand these systems were built to keep us from truly finding and pursuing our passions. But what if this universal credit system actually became a good thing for the majority? What if, knowing our food and bills were covered, we finally had the freedom, the space, and the time to find ourselves? Just a thought.
