Very short term analysis. No, if you lose your job to AI next year, the government won't be taking care of you for the rest of your life like the humans in Wall-E. But in the longer term, there WILL be huge political changes, which could go in more than one direction (and likely will, over time and across locations). What happens if receiving benefits from society (eg: via the government) becomes mostly very detached from making contributions to that society? "To each according to their need" rather than "the more you contribute, in generally, the more society should offer rewards". We don't know. But we especially don't know in a democracy. What happens to a society where a democratic majority is funded by the state, which gets it's funds in turn by taxing a minority? How much would people vote themselves a good life at the expense of the remaining workers? We don't know. A government CANNNOT be funded just by taxing back a portion of the funds it gives away, it needs some wealth creation by non-dependents to get its funding for the dependents. So would the government wind up needing to own all the automation, robots and AI which provides wealth? It's going to be a mess. And there is going to be a lot of self-righteous nonsenses peddled as political opinion in dealing with it.
