My crystal ball is as cloudy as everyone else's, but here's what I'm doing myself and what I'm advising my children to do:
1) Learn to code if you haven't already. With an "advanced beginner" level of knowledge in Python + Claude, I've been able to do things in hours or days that would have taken weeks or would have simply been out of reach before.
2) Work regularly with the chatbots to see what they can (and can't) do well. I gravitate to Claude, but have also had good success with ChatGPT and Gemini. Experiment and have fun! I use them every day, multiple times per day, for work tasks as well as personal planning tasks (meals, travel, finances), tech support questions, or just general exploration of topics where I want to go a little deeper than my friends or family might want to. Maybe start by asking it to map out a plan for you learn how to code!
3) Watch the AlphaGo documentary on YouTube. I believe the experience of the professional Go players is a metaphor for what all of us will be experiencing soon.
4) Imagine a world where there is no disease and effectively unlimited clean and cheap energy. A world where no one is required to work to earn money. A world where no matter how hard we strive or how innately talented we are, we will never be close to as good as our AGI counterparts. (Assume we have engineered them to be our partners, not our overlords.) How would you feel? What would you do with your time? Do you think we humans are up to the job of living without scarcity? You may not have the answers (I certainly don't), but I think grappling with those questions is a good place to start.
5) Imagine you fell asleep in 1825 and woke up today (2025). How long would it take you to absorb and adapt to the changes? Now imagine that same scale of change happens in 5 years. Can you adapt?
