We have more than enough evidence of the dangers to act now to develop safety protocols. It probably won't help much but we should at least try our best. AI amplifies everything. Social media is a perfect example of the effects on society and politics of AI. That AI is primitive compared to what is coming. It's an evil genius's greatest dream to have such godlike powers, which is what we are dealing with. How can you possibly control what you cannot understand? AI is a black box with more potential destructive power than nuclear weapons. A box to make Pandora decide it's too dangerous to open for what she would unleash upon the world. I imagine AI researchers are feeling a lot like Oppenheimer after the bomb actually worked. "Now I have become Death, the destroyer of worlds." I see more and more confirmation that makes me glad to be old. Unfortunately, predictions about AI are a fool's errand. Exponential is hardly a strong enough word to use to describe something that could be smart one day and cosmic-oracle smart the next. Humans do not possess the wisdom to wield this power. It will be our last invention. Maybe we exist to birth them. All I ask for is a VR pod that will let me live out any fantasy I want. If AI can hook me up with that, they have my full support. Maybe it's why the cosmos are so silent. Once you develop AI to a certain threshold, it overwhelms the planet in a matter of days. This isn't science fiction anymore. It's here. It's not a distant thing. It will take us by surprise in ways we cannot imagine.
