I get and respect this guest immensely. Heh, does he need a middle age grad student? 😁 Anyway, arbitrary dexterous jobs are going to be swallowed by AI very slowly. Not never, but slowly. And high precision jobs that meet IRL situations will take time.
Examples include Repairing a Mechanical Watch. Not making one, repairing one. Repairs are much more difficult than Greenfield manufacturing and assembling of the product initially. A second example are lithography machines in chip fans. They already eat automation for breakfast, but that last five percent is hellishly difficult. If you wanted an LLM to understand how to actually build a fan, we are talking millions if not billions of tokens. Each specific to each fab.
And before people come in and say, "they will totally be able to do those things!", I agree. The point is those jobs will last longer, not be immune.
