I think understanding the real, fundimental arguments as to why some people defend AI art (or other "consumer" AI products that actually arent useful in their niche, I say just to try and seperate it from the very real use for it in science which frankly is a whole other thing imo). from what I can tell, the main reason theyre okay with it is "I dont really care about the quality" and "its fast and convenient"
Once you realise this is it, the point of view really changes, if they dont care you either need to dismiss them (they dont care, why should you) or show that they SHOULD care, and if its because its fast and convenient, you should show or provide alternatives that are just as, or show why they shouldnt even bother and just bypass it entirely. I saw a bakery with what looked like a small AI made poster on the window to promote their buisiness, if it was convenience they were after im sure someone wouldve been happy to do a little doodle on an A4 sheet of paper and stick it up there with no time or effort from the company.
another reason may be personal greed, sort of "I dont value art as highly as its priced", and sometimes sure yea I can agree to that, just like everything there are certainly overpriced examples in places where I would never buy, but at some point you have to draw a line (pun intended idk) and accept there is a monetary value to art. someone spends time, effort, and resources to create, yea things can be done to lessen the time and resources but its still work being done and minimum wage is a thing. If youre not going to put any value on a drawing or painting at all then why are you in the market for one? if you need one for something then its an expense like so many other things. no one WANTS to pay for fuel or for a bus ticket to get to work, but they need to because those things have costs and you need it for your end goal so youre okay with paying it. if you want art for free learn how to make it yourself, if you "cant be bothered" and rely on the work of others for it then pay up, and if you dont need it then go without..?
Also bare in mind, nothing in the world is free, even for that "free generative AI software" youre using (assuming youre not paying a subscription, and even those will wring you out the best they can), what data are they gathering from you and selling to other companies? what are they finding out that could impact the cost of your insurance? bills? promotional offers? Is it deepseek that was funded in part by the chinese government and offered for free as an economic warfare tactic against many american AI and tech companies whose valuations took a massive hit when it ended up being as good as it was? what cost are you actually paying vs the $30 it might cost to just pay your mate draw your favourite character from a tv show?
