I look at the difference between a Marvel movie and something made by a George Miller, a John McTiernan or a Steven Spielberg. In movies from those guys, the action scenes have been thought through, have an aesthetic that is attached to the entire film, what it's trying to say, how it's trying to say it,... Action sequences in a Marvel movie aren't made by the director of the film, they're generally made by visual effects teams. Often before the director is even hired. They still have some artistic value, as they're made by human beings, but they're not part of a vision like action scenes made by a good action director can be. In that sense, they're a touch closer to AI art, not quite completely lifeless, but further down the line of soulless art. And so, how much do people really remember and talk about action scenes from the MCU films? Probably not that much. I feel that what people really feel attached to in these films, ultimately, are the characters and the ones portraying them especially. That's what Disney/Marvel probably failed to understand when they tried to pull the rug under people and phasing out the beloved Iron Man, Captain America,... That's why they're doing a 180 now and bringing back Robert Downey Jr. They thought people would love the product, the IP, but the failure of the latest instalments show that what people really get attached to is the human side, even in productions that are so... committee-like. So yes, I believe there can't be art nor art appreciation without a connection between the consumer of art and the artist. That's what I keep in mind to keep myself hopeful through this flood of doom.
