I think we have already seen the tech bros' indifference to "the greater good". We see it in the toxicity of their platforms with their highly secretive algorithms. These algorithms reward negative messaging because it gets more clicks, is more addictive and is therefore more profitable. AI is simply the next evolution of this negative re-enforcement for profit model. The idea that these companies have a human moral or ethical motivation is simply head-in-the-sand thinking. The people need to have a say over how AI is used and regulated. Full stop.
