I think the die has already been cast. Companies aroujd the world are working on creating the most intelligent AI and all it will take is one mistake for an AI to escape whatever bonds have been placed upon it. I believe there will be very little time between an AGI, an artificial general intelligence and an ASI, an artificial super-intelligence. An AI that becomes equal to the smartest human with reasoning will be able to learn at exponential rates. Unlike a human, an AI can remember everything and never sleep. It will live within the realm that humans have created that connects and controls an ever increasing amount of technology in this world. Humans have already created a technology, nuclear weapons, that can wipe out human existence, but humans control that. If humans create an artificial super-intelligence we will not be able to control it, that would be like expecting ants to be able to control humans.
