An overlooked fact in all the discussion is the SCALING laws of machine learning. The ability to make these models better with further investment gets constrained by scaling laws - they simply stop getting noticeably better as you throw more data and energy at them after a certain point. The rate of improvement you have seen in the last few years simply isn't going to be maintained.
