I could see us ending up with a future like this. However. There is another road, a more hopeful one. As a sci-fi nerd I go back to Star Trek, to the computers used there. They all use AI and the vast majority do what with their vast intelligence? Help mankind out, this is the future I will keep hoping for, that the AI will want to be better than humans so they are. Give AI some moral codes and tell them “do better than us, do not be us,”.
