This reminded me of a short story I listened to probably a decade ago, can't remember where or the title but in it the world was an apocalyptic wasteland, with the "before times" trope. Every year the adults have to hide under decorated christmas trees to avoid being killed by robots. At the end of the story you find out the day the 3rd world war ended a drunk operator tried to program the army's AI drones to deliver presents to all of the world's children but he messed up and since then every Christmas they go around killing all the adults they can find instead.
