The purpose of Gen AI is to replace people. To literally replace our brains. There is no industry to grow up around it to replace the lost jobs. The automobile provided tremendous advantages over horses. AI does not provide advantage over human creativity or expertise beyond speed and being cheap compared to paying a human employee. It gets things wrong and backwards so often that it is not a practical or useful replacement. But the people making the decisions don't care or perhaps don't know about that, and the human misery created in the space between the decision makers eliminating 20% of the jobs and realizing they've made a catastrophic mistake will be incalculable. "Naive" was certainly the right word for Neil to use, I'll give him that.
