So AI can only come up with what's already on the internet..., you say, correctly. Having thoughts that no one has yet thought...IS MY BUSINESS. MY JOB. I'm a writer of fiction, and specifically science fiction and fantasy. I've been coming up with those ideas not yet on the internet for most of my life (which includes a lot of years before the internet even existed, long before I was published.) Since I'm not also a scientist, but interested in science, only some of my "what if" ideas and thoughts are "just science." Some are about human character...I make up fictional characters. Every fiction writer does. My characters have to be different enough from all other fiction writers' characters that I don't get sued, but alike enough that they pass as human. I imagine other places--planets, for instance--that are not *this* planet, or the same planet as another writer has written about unless I have their permission. I imagine aliens who aren't human, and humans who are also...not like us. Other writers have done that but we don't all come up with the SAME aliens. A lot of us make up words...but not all the same words. Or the same definitions of these previously unknown-in-any-given-language words. Humans (and my personal book-aliens) can make up things that don't exist yet. We have thoughts that, apparently, AI can't have without scraping our texts off the internet.
Can ANY human make up things? Most, in my opinion. Not all the same quality, but yes. Our autistic son liked making up things that did not exist and naming them. There's a "dream-catcher" on my wall made by the schizophrenic man who once threatened to kill us...unlike any other dream-catcher I've ever seen. Scary thing. (It's good to have some scary things around, IMO.) I had long thought it an excellent expression of disordered thinking until just now, looking at it again, when I saw something in it that suddenly suggested a more reasonalble thought process. Maybe. But it's definitely a unique expression of some neural impulse we might as well call a thought. The new AI components on my computer are eager to have me use them (NO!!! GO AWAY!!! But it doesn't. "What do you want to write? How about a letter of recommendation? How about an ad for your product? How about...." something else I don't want to write.) I'm in a Word file of a novel that I'm revising. And writing my kind of book isn't supposed to be "easy." Fun, sure. Exhilarating, definitely, at times. So are many other things that aren't easy. Fencing with rapier & dagger...absolute blast, not easy. Riding a jumper through a course of jumps. Tennis, baseball, football, swimming, rappelling down the back of a football stadium, singing great music with a really good choir.
If AI could fix my failing vision...great. Would love to be able to drive at night again. If it could fix the damage from the concussions that are still affecting coordination, balance, some executive function, repair the temperature tolerance thing so I could work outside in 100F weather again, give me back the ability to sight-read and sing great music again, great. But I don't want it getting between me and my real work, which is making stuff up and then playing with it.
