when the term clanker first popped up i genuinely thought it was hilarious and even considered incorporating it into my lexicon. the allusion to the n-word completely went over my head, i just thought it was a funny word for these machines that ruin so many peoples lives. it was when i saw the youtube short of the woman in the southern-style diner, cosplaying jim crow racism, and all the skits that followed, that it all clicked. some people just want an excuse to act out bigotry and will take any opportunity to do it. the fact that this is where many minds jumped after the popularization of the term is extremely disheartening to me. in order to find these “jokes” funny, one has to make several wide leaps in logic. why would an ai model be eating at a restaurant, or walking the streets? so while it was funny at first, i think the trend is tainted by weirdos who want an excuse to act as their ancestors did, and make poor taste attempts at jokes about some of the most marginalized people in our society. one last thing, it was a complete mistake to expand into other words that mimicked other slurs. it just proves my point more.
