Huge probelem with this entire argument: it's entirely based on writing and synthesizing an essay.
Yes, essays are one way in which people can "process" and organize ideas, and it can be measured based on the quality of the essays.
I don't ask ChatGPT or other language models to write essays for me, or to organize its own ideas. I use ChatGPT like a generic search engine, that gives easy to access information about almost any topic. I then use that information to make my own sense of it—to connect it with other ideas running around in my head.
I will even occasionally have arguments with the AI, ask clarification questions, etc. It is the act of engaging with the AI with thoughts and ideas that is the "processing" part of learning. Being engaged and yearning to understand more is what builds memory.
So this argument is bunk unless the central finding of this study is that "people who use AI because they are lazy and just want results are dumber" then this study has basically stated the obvious.
Notice how vague the word "use" is? "People who use AI...." That word assumes that everyone utilizes it in the same, and that just isn't true. It's HOW you use AI that will determine whether or not you are learning from it or not
