If you want clear proof that the AI companies always knew what they were doing is theft, look no further than Dance Diffusion (the music genAI). Where Stable diffusion and the like gleefully took whatever data they could, Dance Diffusion kept solely to public domain and creative commons works, because they knew that crossing the MPAA and RIAA was suicide. Physical art didn't have the same heavy duty protections that music had, and so they went to town.
