My dad’s career was programming self-learning algorithms like the ones used in Windows help, so I grew up around these and how they work on a very abstract level. My dad said his programs “aren’t looking for the right answer, they’re looking for the most popular answer, because it’s more likely that’s correct.” KEY WORD: “LIKELY”. I teach English lit and I had to royally dress down my students who turned in an assignment that was STUPIDLY easy and they cheated on with ChatGPT. How did I know? The assignment required their reflection on an assigned short story. They didn’t know it, but that short story has never been digitally published, only physical and in a small private press. So when they asked ChatGPT to summarize a story it had absolutely zero chance of ever being fed, it quite simply made up a very archetypal story based on the title. That was wildly, unbelievably, absurdly not the story. LLMs aren’t search engines, they’re probability engines, and there are times in your life when you should NOT be comfortable with gambling on a probability!!!
