There’s an underlying assumption here that I disagree with. People act like it’s not possible to support oneself or do meaningful work without a white-collar job. White-collar jobs weren’t always a thing! It’s a modern luxury to be able to sit in front of a computer and enter numbers into a spreadsheet and get paid thousands and thousands of dollars for it. In the past, people were working the fields and doing more manual labor much of their lives. Some people would have more sedentary roles, but it was less common. If AI takes away my ability to sit in front of a computer with a spreadsheet and get paid for that, I’m totally OK with that. I think it would be good for humanity to get back to the land and our roots a little bit. There is a huge shortage of plumbers and electricians right now. I don’t think robots will be able to take over those sorts of tasks because so much of our infrastructure is outdated. The house I live in right now is far from up to code. A robot electrician or plumber would only be able to troubleshoot a system. They understood. We will still need human ingenuity and hands on experience for those sorts of roles. At least for a while until things get rebuilt with a newer, more standard setup. I predict that AI will make us some more agrarian society and well we will definitely transfer to a few powerful people, entrepreneurs who are on it right now are able to make moves that were never possible before. Part of the problem is people have this mindset that you go to college for a specific degree and then you work in that field for the rest of your life. That also was not always a thing. And it’s clearly an outdated perspective. Not only do many of my coworkers across the various industries I’ve dealt with work in fields. They never initially studied, as the world evolves fields will develop in ways that no one could’ve predicted when they were in college. There are jobs now that didn’t exist back then, and there are jobs people studied for then that don’t exist now. That’s just the way of life. if people can get over that and allow themselves to learn new things and adapt. I think things will go so much further. And they might actually realize they really enjoy what they end up doing. Working with your hands is especially rewarding. There’s no need for UBI. Just maybe an expansion of disability benefits so that people who can’t work with their hands will be able to live. Right now disability doesn’t cover you if you have that sort of disability because there are jobs you can do that don’t involve needing stable wrists. we will cross those bridges when we get to them though! I’m sure we will figure it out as a human race. It’s an exciting time to be alive!
