It seems to me that Penrose still views modern large language models as data-driven „computational tools“. While their training indeed relies on massive datasets, these models are not database-based systems. Instead, the information from the data is transformed into the parameters of a neural network, which captures statistical patterns and associations. The models do not store facts explicitly but generate responses based on these learned patterns.
And, by the way, even we humans often cannot explain exactly how we arrive at a conclusion or a creative idea.
