The birth control thing compared to sexual drive sounds bogus...
"Breaking from natural selection is the analogy here", says EY, and it is both a bogus analogy and a total misconception of what natural selection is — it has no purpose at all, so, by definition, you can't break from it.
The creation of AI is Intelligent (or at least Intentional) Design.
If the intentional designer wants AI agents to replicate themselves, he just sets the replication drive into the AI system directly.
He doesn't hope the replication will occur as an unwanted consequence of a different primary drive.
It might happen that a primary drive, in a changed landscape, brings unwanted consequences.
Preventing this is part of any good design (including the ability of the system to re-design itself, or check back with us, after unforeseeable changes).
But comparing the casual dynamics of natural selection (which has no purpose, nor pseudo-purpose: our existence as a species was never guaranteed, we never had a drive for more human beings...) to intelligent design is deceitful and unhelpful.
