i share this story on just about any video i can, because i feel like it's a prime example of raw effort over ai usage. i'm studying to get a bachelor's in programming. in high school, i took the highest level computer science course offered- AP Comp Sci A. a major amount of the coursework (i'd say close to 90%, maybe 85%) was busywork, little exercises to introduce and expand on programming methods you'd need later on. my teacher encouraged us to solve these problems in three steps: try it yourself, then ask a classmate, then ask him. instead, about half the students in that class went to chatgpt for answers, submitting code that usually didn't work the first time (if at all) because they didn't look over it or even attempt to debug it. right next to them, i was working my ass off trying to solve everything with my own damn brain, googling things if i needed something to use as a springboard. the ap test was paper and pencil only, writing all our pseudo-code by hand. no computers, no books, no chatgpt. i got a 4 out of 5. as far as i know, the highest score the ai users got was a 3. one of them- who loved to gloat about how quick and efficient it was- didn't even get accepted into the comp sci major he wanted to pursue in college.
