Already made another comment but hi, disabled artist here. I have chronic vestibular migraine with various triggers, and it directly affects my work as a digital artist as exposure to light and too much visual stimuli can put me in so much pain I can hardly function. Alongside visual disturbance, vertigo and mobility issues. But I continue to create, because I have a story to tell and complex thoughts and feelings and soul to pour into my work. That is what I want to do. And I want it to be mine, to contain a piece of myself, because otherwise that is not art. It’s not art if I just tell a machine to create something from a soup of a million other things it’s scanned, because then it’s just that. Sludge. Slop. No soul, no feeling. It’s not art if it isn’t personal. And frankly it makes me sick that AI “artists” are using people like me as an excuse. The difference between us and them are that we have a genuine desire to create something beautiful and personal to share with the world, and are willing to push past whatever barriers are in our way to do that. Beethoven did not stop composing when he lost his hearing. My mentor in my local art league is blind and can only see through a tiny, blurry pinpoint in her otherwise dark vision, and she continues to create some of the most beautiful and soulful paintings in the gallery. My third grade teacher suffered a stroke and struggled to grip a marker but still doodled on the whiteboard, and wrote out notes slowly and lovingly, her own form of art. And I spend maybe 40-60% of my waking life in honest to goodness agony that’s made worse by even perceiving the world around me, but I still perceive it, and interpret it, and try to make beautiful things out of how I’ve interpreted it. That’s what art is about. And you don’t get to hide behind us disabled artists as an excuse while you punch a few buttons and have your meat grinder spit out wretched soulless sausages made from the mangled work of people who actually care.
