Most comments here keep arguing about copyright, but I'm telling you that is the wrong frame.
Obviously the core issue is legitimate: AI companies are monetizing collective human knowledge to the benefit of a few. But copyright is the wrong tool to fix it. Copyright is a system of control, not value flow. What we want is for creators to be rewarded when their work generates value. Copyright gives them the power to block use instead. Those aren't the same thing.
Consider YouTube: imagine any creator could use any music, video clip or image, with revenue automatically split among all contributors. Videos would have higher production value, earning more total revenue, and musicians would likely make more than they do now where content just gets demonetized, pushing creators toward royalty-free alternatives or gambling on upfront licensing. We have the technology to know the answer without the gamble. Copyright makes this unrealizable income and discourages the innovation that could get everybody paid.
Copyright adds friction rather than enabling revenue. We have the technology to implement proportional monetization at scale. Using copyright to fight AI risks the same pattern: blocking progress without solving who actually benefits.
AI could do something better. It can likely calculate the contribution of inputs to outputs, making it possible to pay all contributors proportionately. Even a "public domain" work has value in this model: pay the public.
