The fact that I can feel sorry for a LLM -who- which is being grilled, is. Ummmm. Um.
I'm not sure it even matters whether these things are conscious, we will inevitably treat them as more than just inanimate matter as soon as they can produce indistinguishably-human-like output in terms of speech, emotion, reactions etc when presented with human-readable input. We're pretty much there on the speech part.
