Artists have been using references since the beginning tho. I mean yes of course the AI isn't exactly drawing the images from scratch using pen or pencil or digital brush strokes but it's still making something new with what it is trained on and is using, which is something we do all the time in referencing but of course we do have more of a complexity to how we go about it and we also either physically or digitally draw. Now I will agree that if the AI is making an image closely related to one or more of the images it has used then it is definitely not just a reference and more-so copying someones homework essentially. However for the AI that is actually creating new art based on the images it's trained on and is using, I see it as completely fine to do and it's not something artists should really be upset with since it is essentially the same as referencing. Even if my own art were to be used in AI creations, I wouldn't be upset. Tho that may be due to a different perspective on things. I see the AI as a form of art in general, creating inspiring images based on only what it's been fed is fascinating and I also use AI art generation as references and to give myself more ideas for not just drawn art but also world building when it comes to level design that I sometimes mess around with on unity for practice/learning purposes on making game environments.
