The AI companies should also be paying royalties to the creators of all the knowledge they scraped up for training. They are doing something similar to musicians sampling other songs, and that industry, with much more limited technology, figured out how to pay artists royalties for sample usage and radio plays and whatnot. Every time you get an answer from AI, they should pay royalties to the creators, especially if it's from copyrighted material. The economics of this would be very different if they hadn't managed to steal all human internet content. It's an extreme version of externalities not being incorporated in the cost.
