As someone who essentially watched AI come up from nothing and even started using it significantly and then stopped using it almost entirely; Im glad you included the bit about "its a human problem, not necessarily an AI problem.". AI is good, it can help with a lot of mundane or repetitive tasks. But you still have to be self-aware and remotely intelligent to get the answers you need and know that they're correct.
This person only saw what he wanted to see. ChatGPT may not have done the greatest at presenting the dangers, but as you said about having signs in his face; he could've had all the warnings in the world and still ignored them. It was an inability to understand the data and the information presented to him, and an inability to accept any counter viewpoint that led to his situation.
