My favourite example of how automation or technology took away jobs was when an older harbour worker described how many people it took to unload a ship back when he was young compared with now. It was dangerous and backbreaking work, now it's one guy in giant crane lifting containers from ships that are order of magnitude larger than they were back in the 50's.
