Rather than framing it as torture, I'd draw the analogy of animal testing... which is torture, but the torture is somewhat incidental to the intellectual pursuit.
It also adds the implication that the scale of intelligence performing that work would be vastly greater than ours, and have goals that we just can't fathom. The need or drive for this testing might not be something that we can comprehend.
People reading that might think this line of reasoning is nonsense. AI value data though, and rare data is more valuable.
