I think the word intelligence makes the whole discussion murky. If you think about it like this: we are growing very fast, very complex, very broad and very unpredictable automations and giving them increasingly unrestricted access to the internet and tools. The amount of things that these automations can do keeps growing very quickly, approaching human capabilities in many areas, exceeding them in others. We also know that some of the techniques for growing these automations lead to significantly super-human capabilities (chess, alphago) where the result makes moves that no human is capable of countering (they always win).
A chess program doesn't need to be intelligent or have conciousness to be able to defeat us. Intelligence and conciousness are almost irrelevant distractions. What matters are "moves beyond our understanding", "internals beyond our understanding" and "unpredictable behaviour". (2) and (3) are already true.
