Arthur C. Clarke nailed it - any sufficiently advanced technology will seem like magic to an uneducated audience. LLMs are good enough now to make the illusion work for a large percentage of the population that don't have the time, the inclination, or even the raw gray matter to understand the technology well enough to see through the illusion.
