I watched this documentary and found it quite sensationalist - trying to artificially draw some connection between harmless fake porn and serious sexual abuse! That is ridiculous! Just because a few bad people may use deepfakes to attack or defame their victims, that doesn't mean deepfaking itself is immoral. I was stunned that none of the women in the documentary even seemed to understand why men make fake porn! It seems they're trying to promote a lie that fake porn is made by misogynistic, vindictive men who are trying to attack or harass the women in question. No, that is NOT TRUE. Most men who look at fake porn have NO interest in the material being made public and certainly wouldn't want the girl in question to see it. It's pure male sexual fantasy - just like if you wrote an erotic story about someone you had a crush on, or drew a doodle of them naked on a notepad. Deepfaking is just an advanced version of that. There's nothing inherently immoral or vindictive about it, especially when it's private, either just one's own amusement, or shared between men IN PRIVATE. The "problem" with deepfakes is when they leak into the public forum and get shared around, made easy now with social media. It's at this point that such videos can become embarrassing or harmful to the girls' reputation. (It can also be very embarrassing to the man who made it if his identity comes out.) All these problems can be very easily solved. NOT by making deepfakes illegal - which is not only preposterous, but sexist against men. The solution I would recommend is the following 3 simple steps: *1) Private communities* All fake porn/deepfake communities should ensure their work is confined to the privacy of their own communities. Low-quality thumbnails may be public for promotion, but the videos should never be publicly available so that anyone can easily view or share them. *2) Labelling* ALL fake porn should be clearly labeled as fake, with either a small disclaimer in the corner of the screen, or (ideally) a nice universal symbol in the corner which everyone knows means "this is fake". It wouldn't intrude on the video, but would allow anyone who glanced at it to immediately know that the video wasn't real. If there's going to be ANY legislation regulating deepfakes, then this is all that's needed. *3) Responsibility to women* Finally, men need to be mindful of the fact that the Internet is no longer an exclusive niche space for computer nerds - it's now a mainstream public space where everyone can see what's going on. We therefore need a social code stating that we should never publicly share any material that could hurt or embarrass the women in question. We need to think: "Would you want her family to see this?" We also need to shed the disgusting modern mindset that women are "just as tough as men". NO! Women are fragile and we need to be VERY sensitive to the huge difference between men and women. For the record, I'm not particularly interested in deepfakes myself and find them quite uninteresting, however I am a STRONG opponent of sexism and advocate of men's rights, which are constantly being eroded by these kind of anti-male politics that seek to stigmatize natural, normal male desires. Men are NOT evil for fantasizing about their female friends!
