Dr. Saidy did an excellent job of showing the huge impact artificial intelligence can have on healthcare. The ability to examine data collected from thousands of patients across the world would be an invaluable tool for physicians and has the potential to vastly improve care. The barriers Dr. Saidly described that are preventing AI from becoming a successfully used tool in healthcare raise an important question. Is it ethical to resist the adoption of a tool that has such huge potential to improve care and save countless lives? By not moving quickly to change regulations and implement this game-changing new technology, are we basically killing people? Of course it takes time to change regulations and set up the right controls before we can fully start using AI. But if we as physicians and healthcare providers know something will save our patients’ lives and we don’t do everything we can to use it, I think we’re violating our ethical obligation to our patients. We should do all we can to make these tools available as soon as possible. And despite all its benefits, I think we should be careful not to use AI as a crutch that replaces critical thinking and personalized care.
