There is some fuzzy line where "AI is a tool for artists" can be marginally true. For example, the Corridor Crew anime demo. For that, they: - Hired an anime artist to do character designs and reference art - Post-trained a model with that artist's work (which he was paid for, specifically) - they had to find an open-source model and write the post-training code themselves. - Dressed up as the characters - Captured reference video as those characters - Used the model to convert video into animation in the artist's style. - This, too, required writing the conversion and stitching code themselves. - Applied a massive amount of filtering to get around the massive jank created by the model, applying temporal filtering in expensive video-editing software and hand-touching the worst frames to reduce the jank further. In this case, it involved a dozen real human artists, and the AI tooling was used to speed up the production process of something they legit put a ton of artistic effort into. And I think it is solidly in the middle of the fuzzy zone. The initial model was still pre-trained on other artists' work, and took work away from artists who would have otherwise been able to get paid for keyframes and/or tweening. OTOH, this work would simply have not existed without the AI tooling making it within budget. But anybody doing less than this? Not an artist using a tool. They're just pulling the arm on a slot machine and claiming they created the jackpot on the rare case it coughs up something tolerable. Manual edits to re-prompt? Come on, you don't even know about in-painting?
