I am a somewhat decent artist and, personally, am not a user of AI image generators, (unless you count the capcut microwave thing, then yes, I'm guilty,) but I think I understand what the AI "artists" mean by using it for reference. I think they mean thumbnailing compositions! The specific lines don't have to make sense, and sometimes, it is a STRUGGLE to find a reference with correct angles and positions when you could just type it into a bot easily and come out with a good reference. I don't know why they would do this rather than just doing thumbnail sketches that barely take 10 minutes for even the most complicated of pieces, but if seeing something laid out with decently clear images rather than making sketches yourself is really an improvement, then so be it. I absolutely do not support the idea of AI generators stealing from artists, but I think that getting references could, maybe, be a half-decent reason. Not to try and point out any disabilities or anything, but this could, perhaps, help people with aphantasia. I can imagine it being hard to think about compositions and positioning, which would bring us to the sketching issue again, where people with aphantasia could repeatedly try sketches, but sometimes, it may be easier to just type it into midjourney. Again, just my thoughts! Not trying to offend anybody! Also, the other reasons really don't have a defense, and if this is the only good thing, maybe it's not all that great.
