I don't think anyone's trying to make the argument that prompting AI is the same as actually making art. It's more like commissioning art. The massive shitstorm from artists online regarding AI isn't about a lack of ethics, as the AI isn't doing anything they didn't also do to become artists. That's just a smokescreen to distract from the real reason they hate generative AI: it's hurting their bottom line. As technology improves, more and more people who want to commission art are simply choosing to generate it via AI because it's cheaper, faster, and can iterate, tweak, and improve a piece an unlimited number of times at no extra cost. Human artists are afraid that in the face of automation, they can't keep up and demand for their services will dry up because of automation, much like the horse-ranching industry all but dried up with the advent of the automobile; which outside of a few niche scenarios, outperformed horses as a mode of transportation in every way.
